Skill makes writing better. It doesn't make it easier.

We surveyed 874 writers, most of them with years of experience, about what actually gets in the way. The answer was rarely craft. It was perfectionism, self-doubt and overthinking, and those obstacles didn't fade with time.

What the research found

Experience changes the bottleneck rather than removing it. Perceived lack of skill drops from a quarter of first-year writers to 6% of those with more than a decade behind them, yet perfectionism stays between 42% and 51% in every experience group. More than half of writers with ten-plus years still feel self-doubt at least half the time.

That doubt has consequences. A third of respondents have considered giving up writing because of how it made them feel, and the more often they doubt themselves, the more likely they are to have thought about stopping.

Most writers have never reached for a tool designed to help. Of those who hadn't, over half simply didn't know such tools existed. Among the writers who had tried one, almost all still use at least one regularly.
