A compound word is a word that combines two or more distinct words to create a word with a specific meaning.
There are three types of compound words:
- Closed compounds are compound words that are written as single words, e.g. keyboard.
- Hyphenated compounds are words that use a hyphen between two or more words, e.g. mother-in-law.
- Open compounds are words that are often used together, but have a space in between, e.g. living room.
