Alternative to Turnitin and WriteCheck

Plagiarism comes with major consequences. In colleges and universities, students who plagiarize are often expelled. In the professional world, writers can be sued for plagiarism.

Plagiarism means using someone else’s ideas or words and passing them off as your own. Even unintentional plagiarism comes with major consequences. You might accidentally forget to cite a source. You may also not even realize when you’re plagiarizing something.

That’s why it’s important to check your writing for plagiarism. There are several programs out there for checking plagiarism, including TurnItIn and WriteCheck. However, ProWritingAid’s Plagiarism Checker is both cheaper and more comprehensive than other programs.

A Warning Against Free Programs

A quick Google search will show several options for free plagiarism checkers. These are risky for several reasons.

First of all, the sources they check are not comprehensive. A paid checker has more resources to compare your writing against. Free programs do not guarantee that your work is not plagiarized.

Second, free plagiarism checkers have to make their money somehow. When you read the fine print, you might find some shocking details. Many of these store your writing samples and sell them for a profit. Avoid these risks by paying for a plagiarism checker. It’s cheaper than a lawsuit.

TurnItIn

TurnItIn is geared toward academic writing for both secondary and university level students. Many schools come with a license so professors and teachers do not have to pay out of pocket.

If you must pay out of pocket, TurnItIn is expensive. It works out to be a few dollars per piece, depending on which plan you buy. They don’t list their pricing online, and you must contact sales for a quote.

Because it’s focused on education, TurnItIn is not the best checker for non-academic writing. If you’re writing copy, blogs, or fiction, you’ll need another option.

TurnItIn had an option for students or other writers called WriteCheck. However, WriteCheck is closing down in 2020. To give you an idea of the pricing, WriteCheck charged $7.95 USD for one paper. Two papers were $19.95 and three were $29.95.
